Traveling from San Pedro Sula to Roatan Honduras

Utila

I recently visited Honduras in March 2022. Prior to my trip, I was unable to find any updated information about how to travel from San Pedro Sul to the islands Utila and Roatan since the pandemic. From what I was able to find online, there are two good options for getting to the islands; flying or taking the ferry. I will discuss both options, how much they cost and how to go about booking transportation..

Roatan Airport

Taking a Flight

The easiest way to get from San Pedro Sula to Roatan is by taking a flight. You can book a one way or Roundtrip ticket with Aerolinas Sosa or CM Airlines. They fly directly from San Pedro Sula to Roatan and the flight time is about 45minutes. The flights cost anywhere between $80-$150 one way. I suggest booking a flight for one way of your trip and taking the ferry the other way. You can easily book online or in person at the airport. I booked at the last minute, in person, at the airport. Flying over Roatan and Utila is an amazing experience but if you are nervous to fly on small planes this route is not for you!

Taking the Bus & Ferry

If you want to take the slow route to Roatan and make a few stops along the way then this route is for you! This route includes traveling from San Pedro Sula, to La Ceiba, to Utila, and ending in Roatan.

San Pedro to La Ceiba

Once you arrive at the San Pedro Sula Airport, take a taxi or Uber to Terminal Metropolitana de Bus in San Pedro Sula and book a ticket with Transport Cristina to La Ceiba. A taxi from the airport should cost you around $15 and the taxis accept USD cash or local currency. The Transport Cristina office is located on the second floor of the bus station on the other side of the food court. You must walk through the food court to the other side and you will find the office on the left. We walked around for 30 mins before we found the office so this is why I am giving you directions.

Transport Cristina Bus Schedule as of March 2022

A one way Bus Ticket from San Pedro Sula  to La Ceiba cost $6 per person on Transport Cristina. The bus ride takes about 4 hrs due to very few stops along the way so there is no way you will make it to the ferry in one day. I suggest booking a one night stay in La Ceiba and taking the morning ferry to the islands.

You can also take a taxi from the airport to La Ceiba but it will cost you around $150 one way.

La Ceiba to Utila or Roatan

The ferry ride from La Ceiba to Utila costs $30 per person and takes about 45 mins on the Utila Dream. The ferry leaves La Ceiba at 9am daily except on some days when the ferry is undergoing maintenance. You can take the ferry from La Ceiba and stop in Utila for a few days or you can just take the ferry straight to Roatan. The ferry route stops in Utila for a few minutes before going to Roatan and then repeating the same route in the afternoon. The Utila Dream website seems to have updated and accurate information as far as the schedule. You can purchase tickets online or in person in the office at the ferry terminal before the ferry departs. I suggest arriving 1hr before the ferry is set to depart to purchase your tickets and board.

When departing from La Ceiba, you will be required to pay a small tourist fee of about $1 per person before you board the ferry. After you purchase your ticket you will be directed on where to go to pay this fee.

The ferry from Utila to Roatan cost $30 per person.
